A carton of TEREA that stays factory-sealed indoors keeps for about a year. An opened pack is a much shorter story — two to three weeks before the flavour starts to flatten. In Dubai, where the inside of a parked car in August is a completely different environment from your living room, most of the distance between those two numbers comes down to where you put the box.

This is how we store our own stock, and what we tell customers who ask why a pack that tasted right last month tastes dull today.

The twelve-month figure is a storage window, not a countdown that starts the day you buy. Every carton we send out carries its market seal, batch code and production date, so you can see how recent the stock is for yourself.

What we have actually seen, and what we haven’t

It is worth being straight about the limits of what we know here. Our stock sits in air-conditioned storage from the moment it arrives to the moment it goes out for delivery, and in the time we have been selling TEREA in the UAE we have not ourselves seen a stick damaged by heat. Nobody has brought one back to us ruined by a hot car.

So treat what follows as advice about protecting flavour and keeping sticks in the condition they left the factory in — not as a warning assembled from a pile of wrecked packs we have handled. Tobacco is a dried plant product in a paper-and-foil wrapper, and heat plus moisture is the combination that dulls that kind of thing. It is a sensible precaution, not a rescue operation.

Storing TEREA in Dubai heat: why the climate is the awkward part

Two things about the local climate work against a pack of TEREA. The first is sustained heat for months at a stretch, which is a different problem from a hot afternoon somewhere temperate. The second is humidity, which is easy to forget about because air conditioning hides it — step outside in July and the pack in your pocket goes from dry conditioned air to thick wet air in a few seconds.

Neither does anything dramatic to a sealed carton in a cupboard. Both work on an opened pack that lives between a car, a pocket and a table outdoors. That is the pack that goes flat early, and almost always the one people are describing when they tell us a batch tasted weak.

Where to keep them at home

A cool, dry place out of direct sunlight is the whole instruction. A drawer or a cabinet at room temperature is ideal, and there is nothing clever beyond that. What matters is what you are keeping them away from: a windowsill that catches afternoon sun, the top of an oven or any appliance that throws off heat, a bathroom shelf where the air is damp after a shower, and a balcony store cupboard that is effectively outdoors.

Keep the carton intact until you need the next pack. The carton is doing real work as a second layer, and there is no benefit to opening all ten packs at once — every pack you open starts its own two-to-three-week clock.

The car is the one place we would avoid

A car parked in the sun through a UAE summer afternoon gets far hotter inside than any room in your home, and it stays that way for hours. We would not store sticks there, not even in the glovebox or the door bin, and not overnight.

Carrying a pack in the car while you are driving with the air conditioning on is a different matter and not something we worry about. The problem is the parked car in the sun, which is why the pack that lives permanently in the centre console is the one worth rescuing today.

How to tell a stick has gone flat

Stale TEREA does not usually announce itself. The taste goes thin and slightly cardboard-like, the flavour that should build through the stick stays flat instead, and a menthol or capsule stick loses its lift first because that is the most delicate part of the blend. If you notice the taste turning stale, it usually means the sticks have been exposed to too much heat or moisture.

One useful check before you blame the sticks: try a stick from a pack you have only just opened. If that one tastes right, the problem was storage. Buying in a way that suits the climate

Because a sealed carton keeps for months and an opened pack keeps for weeks, buying by the carton is the storage-friendly option rather than the risky one, provided the carton lives indoors. Ten sealed packs in a cupboard age far more slowly than ten opened packs in circulation.
