How SMARTCORE induction heating technology works

TEREA sticks are built differently from older IQOS HEETS. Instead of a blade pushing into the tobacco, the SMARTCORE system uses a metal heating element inside the stick itself. When you insert a TEREA stick into an IQOS ILUMA device, the device creates an electromagnetic field that heats that internal element, warming the tobacco from within rather than from the surface.

Because the heat comes from inside the stick, nothing charred is left behind in the holder. No cleaning is needed between sessions, and the flavour stays consistent from the first puff to the last. Each stick delivers approximately 14 puffs or six minutes of use, with around 0.5 mg of nicotine.

Why the heating blade is gone

On blade-based generations the internal blade was the usual point of failure: it could break during cleaning or if a stick went in at an angle. Induction removes that part from the device altogether, which means fewer failures and a longer hardware lifespan. ILUMA One, ILUMA Standard and ILUMA i: which model fits

Every model in the range uses the same blade-free induction heating and the same TEREA sticks, so your flavour experience does not change with the hardware. What changes is the format.

• ILUMA i One — a single-piece device with no separate holder or case. Insert a stick and draw — Auto Start lights it without a button. This is what we recommend for anyone who has never used IQOS before.
• ILUMA i Standard — the daily-use format with a separate holder and pocket charger, more battery capacity, and the familiar two-piece IQOS feel.

The i generation: what changed

The i-generation devices — ILUMA i One, ILUMA i and ILUMA i Prime — heat TEREA sticks in exactly the same way as the models before them. What changed is how you work the device.

Two things are common to all three. Auto Start means the stick lights as you draw on it, so there is no button press to begin a session. FlexPuff means the session can stretch to extra puffs based on how you draw, instead of ending at a fixed point.

Two more belong to the holder-based models only. ILUMA i and ILUMA i Prime add Pause Mode, so you can stop a stick partway through and resume it later, and both read out on a touch display.

The ILUMA i One trades those two away: no Pause Mode, and status lights in place of a display. In return it is a single pocket unit that takes up to 20 sticks per charge. On the two holder models you get up to three sticks back to back on the holder before the pocket charger recharges it — a different way of covering the same day.

TEREA sticks and where they come from

TEREA sticks are the only consumable an ILUMA device can heat. Every stick carries the internal metal element that reacts to the device’s electromagnetic field, and the stick is sealed so tobacco does not fall out into the holder. That sealed construction is the reason the device stays clean.
