IQOS ILUMA in the UAE: The Ultimate Guide to Induction Heating Technology

IQOS ILUMA in the UAE: The Ultimate Guide to Induction Heating Technology

IQOS ILUMA runs on induction heating technology. It is a heat-not-burn device that warms a TEREA stick to around 350°C using electromagnetic induction, so the tobacco is heated without being burned — no ash, less smell, and no blade to clean. The heating element sits inside the stick rather than inside the device, which is why the ILUMA range needs TEREA sticks and cannot use older blade-based sticks at all.

This guide explains how that induction system works, what it changes day to day, how the three current ILUMA models differ, and how to pick a TEREA origin once you have the hardware.

Key takeaways

  • Induction heating moves the heating element into the TEREA stick, so there is no blade in the device to snap or scrub.
  • One TEREA stick runs for roughly 14 puffs or six minutes, with about 0.5 mg of nicotine per stick.
  • On the ILUMA i One, a full charge covers up to 20 consecutive TEREA sticks; the holder-based models take three sticks back to back before the pocket charger tops them up.
  • ILUMA One is a single-piece device, ILUMA Standard uses a holder plus pocket charger, and the ILUMA i generation adds draw-activated Auto Start and FlexPuff across the range, plus a touch display and Pause Mode on the ILUMA i and i Prime.
  • HEETS and other blade-based sticks do not work in any ILUMA device.

How SMARTCORE induction heating technology works

TEREA sticks are built differently from older IQOS HEETS. Instead of a blade pushing into the tobacco, the SMARTCORE system uses a metal heating element inside the stick itself. When you insert a TEREA stick into an IQOS ILUMA device, the device creates an electromagnetic field that heats that internal element, warming the tobacco from within rather than from the surface.

Because the heat comes from inside the stick, nothing charred is left behind in the holder. No cleaning is needed between sessions, and the flavour stays consistent from the first puff to the last. Each stick delivers approximately 14 puffs or six minutes of use, with around 0.5 mg of nicotine.

Why the heating blade is gone

On blade-based generations the internal blade was the usual point of failure: it could break during cleaning or if a stick went in at an angle. Induction removes that part from the device altogether, which means fewer failures and a longer hardware lifespan. If you are coming from HEETS, our TEREA vs HEETS comparison covers what changes in practice.

One thing worth knowing in this climate: Dubai temperatures can affect battery performance and device longevity, so keep the device out of direct sun and out of a hot car.

ILUMA One, ILUMA Standard and ILUMA i: which model fits

Every model in the range uses the same blade-free induction heating and the same TEREA sticks, so your flavour experience does not change with the hardware. What changes is the format.

  • ILUMA i One — a single-piece device with no separate holder or case. Insert a stick and draw — Auto Start lights it without a button. This is what we recommend for anyone who has never used IQOS before.
  • ILUMA i Standard — the daily-use format with a separate holder and pocket charger, more battery capacity, and the familiar two-piece IQOS feel.
  • ILUMA i Prime — the newest generation, which adds draw-activated Auto Start and FlexPuff across the range, plus a touch display and Pause Mode on the ILUMA i and i Prime. The holder takes three sticks back to back before the pocket charger tops it up.

If you are setting a device up for the first time, our ILUMA setup guide walks through charging, inserting a stick to the printed line on the filter, and waiting for the ready signal before your first draw. Never force a stick in.

The i generation: what changed

The i-generation devices — ILUMA i One, ILUMA i and ILUMA i Prime — heat TEREA sticks in exactly the same way as the models before them. What changed is how you work the device.

Two things are common to all three. Auto Start means the stick lights as you draw on it, so there is no button press to begin a session. FlexPuff means the session can stretch to extra puffs based on how you draw, instead of ending at a fixed point.

Two more belong to the holder-based models only. ILUMA i and ILUMA i Prime add Pause Mode, so you can stop a stick partway through and resume it later, and both read out on a touch display.

The ILUMA i One trades those two away: no Pause Mode, and status lights in place of a display. In return it is a single pocket unit that takes up to 20 sticks per charge. On the two holder models you get up to three sticks back to back on the holder before the pocket charger recharges it — a different way of covering the same day.

TEREA sticks and where they come from

TEREA sticks are the only consumable an ILUMA device can heat. Every stick carries the internal metal element that reacts to the device’s electromagnetic field, and the stick is sealed so tobacco does not fall out into the holder. That sealed construction is the reason the device stays clean.

We carry TEREA from six market origins — Japan, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Italy, Switzerland and Uzbekistan — and the same flavour name can taste noticeably different between them. You can browse the full range by origin market or work through every TEREA flavour we carry if you would rather start from the flavour profile.

Choosing a TEREA origin

Comparing the same flavour category across countries is the quickest way to find what you like. If you want a classic, balanced tobacco taste with medium intensity, Amber is the usual starting point and suits a wide range of palates. From there, menthol and capsule variants let you dial in how much cooling you want, and the origin markets give you the variety local retail rarely stocks.

Checking a pack and getting it delivered in the UAE

Two things are worth checking on any TEREA pack you buy. First, the ends: TEREA sticks are sealed at the base, which is what prevents tobacco fallout inside the holder. Second, the print quality and the market-specific warnings, which should match the country of origin stated on the pack.

The practical reason to be careful is hardware, not paperwork. Induction only initiates when the device detects the metal element inside the stick, so non-induction sticks will not heat, and forcing them into the holder risks damage. Ordering from a specialist range also means you are not limited to whatever the nearest shop happens to stock — you can pick the origin market you actually want and have it delivered nationally.

Quick answers

Can I use HEETS sticks in an IQOS ILUMA device?

No. ILUMA devices heat by induction and need the metal element built into TEREA sticks. HEETS and other blade-based sticks do not work with them.

How many TEREA sticks can I use on a single charge?

Up to 20 consecutive TEREA sticks on a full charge with the ILUMA i One. The holder-based models take three sticks back to back before the pocket charger tops the holder up.

How long does one TEREA stick last?

Approximately 14 puffs or six minutes of use, and the flavour stays steady throughout.

Does IQOS ILUMA need cleaning?

No. Thanks to the bladeless SMARTCORE design, no cleaning is needed between sessions.

What is the difference between ILUMA and ILUMA i?

ILUMA i is the newer generation: it adds draw-activated Auto Start and FlexPuff across the range, plus a touch display and Pause Mode on the ILUMA i and i Prime. Both generations use the same induction heating and the same TEREA sticks.

How hot does the device get, and does it burn the tobacco?

It heats a TEREA stick to around 350°C using electromagnetic induction, so the tobacco is heated rather than burned — no ash and less smell.

How much nicotine is in a TEREA stick?

Around 0.5 mg per stick. There is more detail in our note on nicotine in a TEREA stick.

Are there nicotine-free TEREA sticks?

Not in our range. Every TEREA variant we carry contains tobacco and nicotine, and the range is intended for adult nicotine users aged 21+.

How do I insert a TEREA stick correctly?

Push the stick in gently until the printed line on the filter reaches the top of the holder, then wait for the ready signal before your first draw. Never force it.
