TEREA, BLENDS or HEETS: Which Sticks Work in Which IQOS Device?

TEREA sticks work in IQOS ILUMA and ILUMA i devices only. BLENDS sticks work in IQOS BONDS only. HEETS work in IQOS 3 DUO and the older blade devices only. The three systems heat tobacco in three different ways, and each stick is built for exactly one of them, so nothing is interchangeable in any direction.

Read it either way. Pick a stick and go across: TEREA has one working device family, BLENDS has one, HEETS has one. Pick a device and go down: an ILUMA takes TEREA and nothing else, a BONDS takes BLENDS and nothing else, an IQOS 3 DUO takes HEETS and nothing else.

Why the sticks are not interchangeable

Every IQOS device heats tobacco without burning it, but the three generations do the heating in three unrelated ways, and the stick has to match the method.

IQOS ILUMA and ILUMA i — induction. The ILUMA family uses the SMARTCORE INDUCTION SYSTEM. There is no blade in the holder. Instead, each TEREA stick carries a small stainless-steel element inside the tobacco, and the device heats that element by induction. A stick without the element has nothing for the device to heat, which is why HEETS and BLENDS do nothing in an ILUMA.

IQOS BONDS — heat from the chamber wall. BONDS uses the ROUNDHEAT TOBACCO SYSTEM. It is also blade-free, but it does not use induction: the chamber itself warms the stick from the outside. BLENDS sticks are built for that chamber. A TEREA stick’s internal element is not heated by it, and a HEETS stick is the wrong construction for it, so neither works.

IQOS 3 DUO and older devices — the blade. The original generation pushes a ceramic heating blade up into the centre of a HEETS stick. HEETS are made with a channel for that blade; TEREA and BLENDS are not. Forcing a TEREA stick onto a blade is a common mistake, and it is covered in detail in Does TEREA work with IQOS 3 DUO?

TEREA: IQOS ILUMA and ILUMA i only

TEREA is the stick for the whole ILUMA family — ILUMA, ILUMA ONE, ILUMA PRIME, and the newer ILUMA i, ILUMA i ONE and ILUMA i PRIME. The “i” generation changed the device (touchscreen, pause mode, FlexPuff), not the stick: every TEREA carton sold on this site works in every ILUMA and every ILUMA i. TEREA does not fit IQOS BONDS and does not fit IQOS 3 DUO or any older blade device.

BLENDS: IQOS BONDS only

BLENDS are the sticks made for BONDS by IQOS, and for nothing else. They will not run in an ILUMA, and the reverse is equally true: a BONDS device will not run TEREA or HEETS. If you own a BONDS, BLENDS is the only stick to buy; if you own an ILUMA, BLENDS is the one stick to avoid.

HEETS: IQOS 3 DUO and older blade devices only

HEETS belong to the blade generation — IQOS 3 DUO, IQOS 3, IQOS 2.4 Plus and IQOS ORIGINALS. They do not work in ILUMA and they do not work in BONDS. How to tell which system you have

Look in the holder. An IQOS 3 DUO or older holder has a visible ceramic blade standing up inside the chamber. An ILUMA holder has an empty, smooth chamber with no blade. A BONDS is a single all-in-one unit rather than a holder-and-charger pair, with a round, blade-free chamber.

Look at the pack. The stick name is printed on every pack and carton: TEREA, BLENDS or HEETS. That word decides the device, whatever the flavour, colour or origin market printed next to it.

Look at the stick. A HEETS stick has an open tobacco plug with a channel for the blade. A TEREA stick is sealed at the tobacco end and has no channel. If a stick has to be forced, it is the wrong stick.

Mistakes to watch for in UAE listings

Some online listings in the UAE describe BONDS devices as being “for TEREA”. That is wrong. BONDS uses BLENDS; it does not accept TEREA, and a customer who buys a BONDS on that description will not be able to use the TEREA they already own. Check the table before you check the price.

Does TEREA work in IQOS BONDS?

No. BONDS uses the ROUNDHEAT system and takes BLENDS sticks only. TEREA is built for the induction system in IQOS ILUMA and ILUMA i.

Can I use BLENDS in my IQOS ILUMA?

No. BLENDS have no induction element for an ILUMA to heat. ILUMA and ILUMA i take TEREA only.

Does TEREA work with IQOS 3 DUO?

Do TEREA sticks work in both ILUMA and ILUMA i?

Yes. ILUMA i is a newer device on the same induction system. Every TEREA stick works in every ILUMA and every ILUMA i.

Can HEETS be used in IQOS ILUMA or IQOS BONDS?

No to both. HEETS need a heating blade, which neither ILUMA nor BONDS has. HEETS work only in IQOS 3 DUO and the older blade generation.

Is there any adapter that makes TEREA work in a BONDS or a 3 DUO?

No. The incompatibility is in how each device heats the stick, not in the shape of the stick, so there is nothing to adapt.
